Every child arrives in your setting with their own unique way of experiencing the world. For children on the autism spectrum, that world can feel especially bright, loud, unpredictable, and overwhelming — or deeply fascinating, rich with pattern and meaning. As educators, our role isn't to change who a child is. It's to truly see them — and to shape an environment where they can feel safe, connected, and free to learn and grow.

This session is designed for early childhood educators who are supporting children with mild to moderate autism in their everyday practice. Whether you have a formally diagnosed child in your care, a child awaiting assessment, or simply a child whose needs you're still trying to understand — this session will give you the knowledge, confidence, and practical tools to make a real difference.

We'll move beyond checklists and labels, and into the why behind the behaviours — exploring what children on the spectrum are communicating, what they need most, and how small, thoughtful adjustments in your environment, relationships, and daily rhythms can help them thrive.

What will you learn?

Understanding autism in the early years A strengths-based introduction to autism — what it looks like in young children, how it presents across a spectrum, and why early childhood is such a powerful window of opportunity.

Seeing behaviour as communication Unpacking the behaviours that can feel challenging — meltdowns, shutdown, sensory-seeking, rigidity, social withdrawal — and learning to read them as messages rather than problems to manage.

Sensory processing and the ECE environment How sensory differences shape a child's experience of your setting, and practical ways to create spaces that feel safe, predictable, and manageable for sensory-sensitive children.

Building connection and trust Why relationship is the foundation of everything — and how to build genuine, attuned connections with children who may not show connection in the ways we expect.

Practical strategies for everyday moments Concrete, accessible strategies for supporting children across the routines that matter most — arrivals, transitions, mealtimes, play, group times, and farewells — including visual supports, predictable rhythms, and co-regulation tools.

This was great. I loved the examples and points on how we see children as capable but then we take away their decision making with something as simple as coat wearing.
