Balancing respectful care and self-respect as an educator

After working in a RIE based centre as a mentor for around 7 years, one thing I often find that gets a little lost in translation is the concept of “respectful care.”

When I first learnt about respectful care I found it to be quite confronting as I considered myself a fairly respectful person but I had developed this lens of children needing to be taught wrong from right and as a young parent was very strict. I was impatient and inflexible. Before I had children of my own I was certain of my abilities and confident about the parenting style I had chosen. When my eldest, strong willed daughter was around 3 years old I was introduced to RIE (the philosophy created from the teachings of Magda Gerber) and my values were challenged in a way I was not prepared for.

As I learnt the importance of allowing babies time to process, and let go of some slightly unnecessary expectations, such as instant obedience, and respect….(true respect is always earned, regardless of your age). I saw first hand how nurturing the relationship between me and my daughter was so much more important than strategising how to combat specific behaviours that emerged. Behaviours are a symptom of the problem, not usually the problem itself.


In the attempt at being respectful of children however, it is easy to let respect of one’s self get lost along the way too. Just as we can over correct when we make a mistake in our car, the same can happen as we strive for respectful care of children. Finding balance is key, if you lose your self respect in the search for respectful care, you instead become a slave to small people who search endlessly for boundaries that they cannot find. If you’ve done a bit of reading into RIE philosophy, you will have stumbled upon the importance of “relationships.” In my opinion, to become a great teacher, you need to strive to become the best version of you that you can be. Because mostly as Magda Gerber says "what we teach, is our selves."

One memory that will always stick with me from my initial learning about RIE, is that previously I’d noticed that 2 to 3 year olds are GREAT at reminding other people about the rules, but not necessarily following these themselves. Often in a busy day care situation this can result in someone being roughly pushed as they go to do something that this knowledgeable toddler, knows they shouldn’t do. A slight over reaction….. but one day in a busy RIE based setting where we were really conscious of using gentle touch and never scooping children up unexpectedly, I witnessed 2 knowledgeable toddlers observing an infant crawling towards where the school bags were hung. These 2 had frequently been reminded, very patiently, not to open bags and go through the belongings. As this infant reached the bags and attempted to pull herself up, these 2 toddlers approached, one had her hand on her hip and the other hand out in front of her saying “NO!” The other covered the bag with both her hands and looked at the infant. Neither touched her or pushed her, they just blocked her access, gave a clear instruction, and waited. The infant did choose to move away and the toddlers moved off, happy that they’d done their part in upholding the law.

Their body language was so familiar as my colleagues and I had done exactly that with them many times before. Seeing how gentle and patient they were, really made me reflect on how in my past, with less knowledge I would have scooped a child off a bag and likely reprimanded at the same time and if that’s how you got treated, if that was your usual experience of discipline, then of course that is how you’d attempt to uphold the law yourself. Children learn from us how to behave with others.

So going back a bit, I mentioned being careful not to lose your self respect. Disappointment can affect all of us very differently. In striving to be respectful, I often see teachers tip toe around things that could cause disappointment. For instance carrying someone to the detriment of their back because the child will cry if they’re put on the ground, or allowing someone to walk around with food because they don’t want to sit at the table (when settling a very upset child new to a centre, there is always room to bend rules as you build a relationship, but as you build that relationship, children seek the security of boundaries and knowing that you’ve got their back, regardless of how they behave).

It is inevitable in life that you will face disappointment on occasion and better to practice and discover that it is not world ending and sadness is something that we can all recover from. As you build a relationship with a child, your needs have to factor into this relationship as well and it is healthy to be comfortable with saying no if you’re asked to do something you’re not willing to do.

For instance, the child that wants to be carried. What do they learn from this? Other than successful communication of their desire. How can they explore their own capabilities from your hip?


Now I don’t suggest you ignore this child and leave them miserable. Never! But there is an opportunity for a two way conversation here , with your perspective included too... "Ah, I see you want me to pick you up, I won’t pick you up, but I can sit here beside you/walk with you/hold your hand….”

Be honest, acknowledge that you understand, state your perspective and offer a compromise that allows them to extend their capabilities. You’re more likely to develop a connection being present at their level than absently carrying them on your hip anyway.

For the child that doesn’t want to sit. Are they truly hungry?
If you develop a culture where the expectation is that we sit for food and standing communicates that we’re finished, it is mind blowing how quickly infants and toddlers can develop great table manners. Janet Lansbury has some great resources on how to develop this culture, and sometimes it calls for us to follow through with removing food after a fair warning, and that can be disappointing. But the next meal is not all that far away and children actually feel really safe when there is predictability about how daily rituals such as mealtimes, are run.

When these rituals are well established I find that children 
can easily communicate if they’re tired or out of sorts when they get to a predictable part of the day and all of a sudden can’t perform their usually mastered tasks.
So on a finishing note, be patient, be honest, be kind, and be gentle, but not just with the children. Have an expectation of others to treat you this way as well, and remember that we’re all on different parts of a journey so be patient with those who don't yet have the knowledge that you have. I appreciate the kindness I was afforded when I started my journey of learning about RIE and I hope that I can help to inspire others. My daughter is turning 12 this year and I also have 2 sons and I am so thankful for what I have learned because I really enjoy my witty, cheeky and thoughtful children.
