The Educator as a resource

It is widely known and accepted in the ECE sector that children learn best in an environment that supports their play. Modern ECE services tend to provide these environments however this often leaves educators confused about when and how they can contribute to children’s learning.

Literature agrees that educators’ careful consideration and intentional involvement can play a critical role in supporting children to learn skills and knowledge and to foster and develop dispositions and working theories through play. However this is dependent on educator knowledge, knowledge about timing, when is it best to intervene? When will I ‘add value’ to children’s play?

Different sorts of intervention, different kinds of play and children’s learning outcomes all need to be considered when making decisions as educators. Educators also need knowledge about a wide variety of interventions, strategies and interactions, to be effective. Teaching is complex and dynamic and requires you to constantly change your approach to the situation and your learners to be most effective.
